Unlocking the potential of industrial policy to achieve the SDGs

We are witnessing a renewed global interest in industrial policy, driven by trends such as digitalization, decarbonization, and the recalibration of global production. The landscape of industrial development has become more complex due to challenges such as the post-pandemic recovery, the climate crisis, international conflicts and macroeconomic instability.

The Multilateral Industrial Policy Forum (MIPF)

UNIDO as the specialized UN agency with a unique mandate to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development, established the MIPF to facilitate the debate on how to leverage industrial policies to foster productivity and growth, resilience and environmental sustainability, and address societal challenges. The MIPF encourages open discussion on cross-cutting thematic issues, including greening the economy, digitalization and technology transfer.

The inaugural edition of the MIPF took place in a hybrid format on 20–21 March 2023. Around 500 attendees, including high-level policymakers and world-leading industrial development experts, discussed how contemporary industrial policy can be effectively leveraged to accelerate progress on the SDGs, in particular SDG 9 “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure”.

Objectives

The MIPF serves as a global platform for UNIDO Member State policymakers and other stakeholders to engage in mutual learning, knowledge exchange and the sharing of best practices related to the different stages of the industrial policymaking cycle, from policy formulation and design to implementation, monitoring and evaluation.

By promoting stronger multilateral cooperation at both the regional and global levels, the Forum cultivates open dialogue between policymakers, practitioners, development researchers and business professionals, thereby facilitating collaborative efforts to formulate effective and actionable industrial policy solutions.
